Installing Tongue & Groove Plywood Flooring

This video demonstrates the installation of tongue and groove plywood flooring using the standard COMPACKED process. Floorboards are laid perpendicular to joists as per GA drawings, secured with Simpson Quikdrive or non-collated screws—28 fixings per full sheet. Sheets are cut with a circular or jigsaw, ensuring tight joins before securing. Attention is given to installing sheets face-up and neatly cutting around obstacles like pipes or columns. The guide highlights practical tips and tools to ensure a precise, professional finish for flooring installations.

This chapter covers how to install tongue and groove ply flooring using the standard compact process.

First, we need to lift the pack of timber onto the joists.

Use a forklift to avoid manually lifting each sheet.

Starting from a full sheet edge, lay out the floorboard according to the GA drawings, usually perpendicular to the joists.

Our recommended tool is the Simpson quick drive. These are available through our tool rental program.

Alternatively, generic non collated screws can be supplied.

Ensure you fix sheets using a minimum of four screws per joist. For a full sheet, this means twenty eight fixings per sheet.

Ply can be cut using a circular saw or jig saw. Ensure all joins are tight before screwing the sheet down.

Ply sheets have a finished top face and raw underside, so make sure the sheets are installed face up.

To cut around pipes or columns, we recommend a jigsaw to give a neat finish.
